Here is the process that we use to identify and refine our target market. Sometimes this process has to be done a number of times throughout the lifetime of a campaign to optimise it.

When it comes to digital marketing a lot of practices make a number of mistakes when it comes to identifying an ideal client profile. Usually, businesses quickly jump onto where the client is and what services they may need, however, there is so much more that can be done in order to refine the ideal client profile. Here is our 7-step process that helps us identify client profiles that we then use for Search and Social media marketing campaigns:

  1. Create a list of benefits that your business offers
  2. Analyse pain points that your services solve for your customers (
  3. Identify what kind of people need these problems solved (business owners, homeowners, top income earners)
  4. Determine your potential customer characteristics (How old are they? Do they travel much? Are they married?)
  5. Determine their behavior (is there a defined pattern to their day, or are they on-the-move type of people?
  6. What career path does your ideal client have? (industry sectors and job roles is a great way to target your customers)
  7. What price point can they afford?

Having answers to these questions will help you refine targeting options within your digital marketing campaigns. Hopefully, these questions will also create additional audiences to your existing campaigns making them more refined.

Why is this important?

There are a number of reasons why identifying your ideal customer profile is important. Firstly, defining your target market allows you to test a number of audiences and their response. Secondly, marketing to a smaller market segment is the simplest way to optimise your marketing budget. Finally, and most importantly by marketing to a distinct target audience campaigns will always get the best response rate (given that message is right).
